Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre,” Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin (WALT DOHRN). Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate reality of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona (CAMERON DIAZ) have never met. OUR READERS REVIEWS
These reviews are sent in by our readers..... if the movies aren't on circuit why not rent the DVD?
I took my six year old daughter to watch the latest animated offering from Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures – UP. The movie begins with an introduction to the main character Carl Fredricksen who meets a tomboy named Ellie, they share a common interest namely the famed explorer Charles F Muntz who becomes their hero. Ellie expresses her dream of moving her clubhouse to Paradise Falls in South America, a location that Charles F Muntz had discovered, Ellie makes Carl promise that he will. Carl and Ellie wed and grow old together. Eventually Ellie passes on and their dream never becomes a reality. I found the opening part of the movie really heartwarming. The other main character is Russell who is a delightful little Wilderness Explorer whose sole purpose is to obtain his last scout badge, namely assisting the elderly. The story kicks into life with Carl and a eager Russell setting sail, literally, to Paradise Falls. Throw into the mix Charles F Muntz, talking dogs and a supposedly extinct bird aptly named Kevin, the story roars into life and adventure, drama, laughter and excitement till the end. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the film, so much so that my daughter did a oral review of the movie to her Grade one classmates on her first day back at school. I would certainly recommend it for kids and adults. Paul Francis Oct 09
District 9 - When I saw the trailer I thought the film was going to be disappointing, but I was wrong. I enjoyed District 9. It was violent and quite shocking in places (definitely not for children). All in all a film SA should be proud of. The story is about aliens that become refugees in Johannesburg, but there are echoes from the past, specifically the recent xenophobic violence as well as the apartheid years. The film is also very funny in places. But what struck me most is how the film made me feel. I saw a comment on Rotten Tomatoes that captures it perfectly: "You don’t feel bamboozled, fooled, or patronized by District 9, as you did by most of the summer blockbusters. You feel winded, shaken, and shamed." It's a good movie and i recommend you see it. Jill Sep 09
Hi Jill, I went to go see Hangover – it was very funny but there is a lot of porn scenes in there – I would not let under 18yrs see this. I mean totally nakedness – if you are older and you’re looking for a good laugh then this is a definite must. Collette July 09
The movie "My Sister's Keeper". My daughter (aged 15) and I saw the preview Sunday past. I would describe the movie as 'emotional drama". Definitely NOT for younger children. At 15, my daughter could deal with it. Those who have read the book, will form their own opinion of the movie's end. Minie August 09
When I started to watch the movie I though "Oh No, not another dance movie!" I quickly realized that Dance Flick is a spoof (or parody) on all the recent & many dance movies such as Step Up, Footloose, Save the Last Dance, Flashdance, Twilight etc. Dance Flick can't be described a "good" movie in the proper sense of the word. It was fun and although I sat next to someone who obviously didn't enjoy it as much as I did, I left with the feeling that I am glad I am not too old, nor too much of an intellectual snob to enjoy the movie. There were moment when tears of laughter where running down my face. That is always a real tonic. It was made even more enjoyable because I had seen most of the other "dance" movies with my kids. If you are looking for some fun, and you want to see this with older kids and teens then go ahead and have a good laugh. Some will find it silly, but there is a place for silly in life too. Jill Sep 09
I recently took my 4 yr old son Jarrod to watch G-Force. He thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the fact the guinea pigs could be agents as well. He also like the fact they had there own small tools and equipment. I watched it with him and enjoyed it as well. I would recommend it to any parent as there was no violence in it. Kim Edwards Sep 09
I went to see Hang Over (Definitely did not take the kids) and laughed my way through from beginning to end. It is always funny to see what guys get up to at Batchelor parties, but the combination of 4 friends who all have completely different personalities in Vegas was killer. I must admit that the language got a bit rough at times. The movie was also surprisingly not predictable , I was sitting on the edge of my seat trying to guess what was going to happen next right up until the end the movie. You have to love the Tiger in the toilet and the guys finding out they had stolen a police car sometime during the previous evenings antics (Which they could not remember).
This was good entertainment. Wayne Sinclair Sep 09
"My Sisters Keeper" - A definite must see movie, thought provoking and very emotional. Excellently told and brilliantly acted by everyone. I hadn't read the book so didn't know what to expect, but even if you have, still excellent. Lauren August 09
My Hubby & I took a day off work to take my six yr old daughter together with our 2 nephews & 1 niece out for a treat. All the kids wanted to go to the movies to watch Ice Age 3-Dawn of The Dinosaurs. Wow! it proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable movie for adults as well. Sid (Sloth) feels that Manny & Ellie (Mammoths) no longer need him, as they have their own little bundle of joy on the way. Sid finds some dinosaur eggs, decides to play Mum to them, after they hatch. Mummy Dinosaur is not too happy about this when she finds out & comes back for the babies taking Sid with her as well. Diego seems to be experiencing his mid-life crisis during all this mayhem. Anyway the clan gather together to go find Sid, who has disappeared into a lush forest, amidst lurking dinosaurs & alligators. This is where there is a wild & wonderfully swashbuckling character, Buck, is introduced. He adds such dramatic & hilarious adventure to the movie. Ellie gives birth to little Peaches while trying to fend off some monstrous creatures. Guaranteed that the movie will have you at the edge of your seat throughout... The Kids enjoyed the movie so much, that when they heard that MacDonald's was giving away Ice Age 3 Toys with their Happy Meals, they enticed us to go through for our lunch. Kim Francis Sep 09
My boys thought it (GI Joe) was awesome, it reminded them of the future and it was funny. It was similar to transformers because of the action. The best part was when they were in their suits catching the hummer and dodging missiles. It was pretty cool when they were training for battle. The characters they liked were the Ninja and the main character. They liked the team work and when the men were bitten by a cobra, they still survived. Amanda van Eyssen Sep 09
